We enjoyed out trip to the north shore of Lake Superior 8/18 thru 8/22. It is a little bit of a trip up there pulling the camper but it is well worth the time on road.

Online Class (final project)

I am taking an online development class via Coursera.org.  The language is called "Processing" which is a Java variant. It can output code in raw Java, JavaScript, and be package for Android.

My development and testing has been centered on Mac + Safari and iOS (iPad.)

Here is the link to my final project:

The "Stickman Jam" app

The "Stickman Jam" app

You click on the sound buttons and the stickman dances and changes colors in response to your actions.

  • Works: Mac + Safari, iOS+ Safari (it is formatted for the iPad but will work on an iPhone5)
  • Partially works:  Ubuntu + Firefox (visuals work, but no audio)
  • Does not work: Windows XP + IE (does not support the canvas tag)

This likely works on most platforms with Google Chrome but I have not tested it.

Thanks, JH

July Rain

  • 7/9 - 0.6 inches of rain  (We really needed the rain... things were turning brown)
  • 7/10 - 7/14 - 0.20 inches of rain (We were gone camping and checked the gauge we returned)
  • 7/19 - 0.30 inches of rain
  • 7/30 - 0.20 inches of rain

July was pretty dry. We had to run the sprinklers pretty aggressively to keep the garden, berries, and new sections of grass healthy.

Linked dipole info

I am going to build a linked dipole as part of my travel bag for my KX3. I whipped up a simple spreadsheet with the math for standard sized dipoles since I need that info before I go to far down the path of the project.

Standard dipole math

I need to ponder my next steps a bit. I think that I am going to have legs for 17m, 20m, and 40m. (10m and 15m should work via the 40m length or close enough to work ok.)

KX3 - Park in Ames,IA

Sunday 06/30/2013....

I was able to sit down for about an hour at a city park in Ames, Ia and play with the KX3.

We were in Ames for the weekend to visit some my wife's extended family. There is a nice city park behind my sister-in-law's home that has some nice trees and picnic tables. I went to the park and threw up a random wire antenna in the trees and put the KX3 and Macbook Air on the picnic table.

I had a nice 20 minute long CW qso on 20m with a 5 lander from Texas.

I am really enjoying the KX3 and it has been fun to have a radio that I can be on the air while camping and traveling in a minute of a few minutes.
