NG0R results for Field Day 2009

It looks like I placed 17th out of 80 in category 1B1.

I did not put in much of an effort. I probably operated about 4-5 hours pretty casually
from Monson Lake State Park.

My K2 was AWOL so I was not as motivated as I would have liked to be. Still not too
bad a showing. I expect a better showing next year... a top ten showing would be more
within my target.

NG0R Station Log

If you look at the right side of the screen under navigation you can get to my station log.

I am still working out the kinks. But as I get CQRLOG running and my existing log
file imported I will try to post my station log to the web on a regular basis. CQRLOG
has a nice export to HTML feature. Once I have it looking the way that I want I will
put a link on the website in a location that is easier to find.

PSK-31 QSO with CO2XZ

I had a nice QSO with Gene in Cuba today. This was my first PSK contact on 20m since replacing my XP machine with the new Ubuntu machine in the shack.

Gene was working people at a pretty nice clip. He would chat for 10-15 minutes and
then someone else would be there waiting for the next QSO to begin. I would love to
see some pictures from Gene showing his QTH, his shack, and the surrounding areas.
I have always wanted to visit cCuba. I thougt that it would be a neat place to spend
a couple of weeks photographing the area and culture.

FYI... I am trying to post this from the Ubuntu PC running Firefox with the Scribefire
plugin. I used Gimp to resize the photos.

PSK-31 QSO with ND0K last night on 80m

A nice QSO with Lee ND0K near Kansas City, MO. I was running my Small Wonders Lab
PSK Warbler. It is a nice little 3 watt unit dedicated to PSK. I had it connected
to my 40 foot VHF tower shunt loaded for 80m. (We are a two tower QTH here...
a VHF/UHF tower and separate HF tower with a 160m shunt.)

This was my first QSO using my new PC running Ubuntu 9.04 CQRLog, and gMFSK. (I
have gMFSK dedicated to the warbler rig. FLDigi to the Icom 756 and Elecraft K2 rigs.)

Once I get my full log imported in CQRlog I will try to use HTML export feature so
that I can try to post on the website for people. (Yeah I know... I need to get
Log Book of the World setup as well.)

QRP kit for $19

I saw
an interesting post on the Soldersmoke blog
for a new QRP rig.

http://www.genesisradio.com.au/Q5/

It looks like a
1w kit with about 40 parts. They have a for video on site showing it in action. It
looks like it is possible to push this to a whopping 3w.

Currently they offer
kits for 10.116mhz and 3.56mhz. They plan to have radios for 80,40,30,20 respectively.
(hmmm... no 17m?)

$20US + $9 for shipping.

I will probably
order a couple of these for my son as he likes to help with the iron.

It would be better
is this was a transceiver... but I can't imagine that it would be that hard to brew
up a receiver to go with this.

Scalloped Potatoes - Mom's Recipe

This recipe makes 4-6 servings.  Adjust accordingly for the number of people
to be served.

2 pounds potatoes (about 6 medium)

1/4 cup finely chopped onion

3 tablespoons flour

1 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon pepper

1/4 cup butter or margarine

1/2 cup milk

Heat oven to 350.  Wash potatoes; pare thinly and remove eyes.  Cut potatoes
into thin slices to measure about 4 cups.

In greased 2-quart casserole, arrange potatoes in 4 layers, sprinkling each of the
first 3 layers with 1 tablespoon onion, 1 tablespoon flour, 1/4 teaspoon salt, dash
pepper and dotting each with 1 tablespoon butter.  Sprinkle top with remaining
onion, salt and pepper and dot with remaining butter.

Heat milk just to scalding; pour over potatoes.  Cover; bake 30 minutes.
Uncover; bake 60-70 minutes longer or until potatoes are tender.

Let stand 5 to 10 minutes before serving.
